Abstract

The focus of the research was on the extensive usage of such prefixes as hyper- and super- (and similar), in philosophical texts, cultural studies, as well as architecture theories and criticism in the 20th  – 21st centuries. The starting point for this article was the introduction of the term ‘hypersculpture’ by the Russian art historian Aleksandr Stepanov in his recent book ‘Poetics and Rhetoric of Architecture’ as a tool to describe some modern and postmodern buildings. The other point of departure was the understanding of the unique role of ‘aesthetics of the Excess’ in the contemporary art world in general. Despite the fact that a number of researchers and critics have pointed out this aspect of cultural development, there is an obvious lack of such studies in architectural criticism in Russia. The article is an attempt (at least to some extent) to fulfill the gap. The result of the research presented a number of features, which characterize the aesthetics of the excess. The reader will find the origins of the phenomenon as well as conclusions on the current supereclectical state of architecture, as an outcome of hypermodern situation in the development of civilization.
